International Award – In October 2007 Miss Davis, our Head Teacher went to the British Council Award Ceremony in London to collect an International Schools Award. Here is a picture of her being presented with this by BBC News Reporter, George Alagiah.

Hatherop Primary School achieved the Full International Schools Award for the links it has made with other countries, enabling the pupils to be aware of different cultures around the world.

France: Hatherop Primary has links with a school in a small village in the Rhone-Alpes region of France and the children in Class 3 each have a French penpal that they write to.

Kenya: Following a visit by a relative of one of our Governors to Kisa in Kenya, the whole school has been fundraising to build a classroom for a school and provide a borehole for water for the village.

Italy: In 2007 we had an Italian Language Assistant working in school, courtesy of the British Council, and, as well as teaching Italian, she introduced the children to Italian food and taught them cooking skills.

African Caribbean Music: We invited Kulchalee to bring his African Caribbean music and dance to school for the children to enjoy. We all learnt to Salsa.

In June 2009, Class 3, with friends from Southrop Primary School visited Normandy in France staying in Le Chateau d’ Ebblinghem for four days. As part of their history project they took trips to the battlefields of Agincourt, practised their French Language skills in Berck Sur Mer Market and enjoyed a visit to the local Chocolate factory.
Our youngest pupils take ‘Barney Bear’ on holiday with them, returning with pictures of his journey. They talk about what he saw and put him on the globe. Barney is so popular that he has a helper, Spotty, who also travels to interesting countries.
